CLIFF HOUSE

β€œThe architecture functions as a viewing instrument, utilizing subtractive voids to anchor the user to the bedrock and curate the chaotic vastness of the ocean horizon.”

The goal wasn't to put a building on the cliff, but to make one emerge from it. I treated the site that dramatic edge where the earth falls away to the endless ocean as the primary material. My design is fundamentally an act of excavation and subtraction, carving voids and extending directly from the cliff's topography. This approach ensures the architecture doesn't interrupt the breathtaking natural theater; instead, it uses massive, raw walls to anchor itself to the bedrock. Every internal space is carefully shaped by the voids that define it, resulting in a series of framed apertures that cut through the mass, turning the vast, chaotic horizon into curated, intimate views. It's a shelter that feels less assembled and more discovered, blurring the line between the built environment and the elemental power of the coast.
